Miss ‪My Chemical Romance‬? Still love ‪Alkaline Trio‬? Creeper may well be your new favourite band. They’ve built up a reputation as a formidable live force across the UK in recent years, but now these South-coast miserabilists are taking on the Main Stage at Reading Festival.

Today they upped their game on an epic scale, with a show that mixed the theatrics of MCR at their best, with the catchiest pop-punk hooks. Frontman Will Gould channelled the spirit of all our teenage crushes (and ‪Freddie Mercury‬ too) belting out hits from the band’s debut album ‘Eternity In Your Arms.’

Set highlights include ‘Down Below’ and opener ‘Suzanne’ which are both sung with passion and devotion, to a rapturous reception from the crowd.

Halfway through the set Gould calls for the crowd to divide into two huge circle pits which dutifully descend into chaos for ‘Poison Pens.’

There are tender moments too, with Hannah Greenwood’s solo acoustic rendition of ‘Crickets’ proving a quiet reprieve from the moshing.

Set closer ‘Misery’ provides the ultimate singalong ballad, and you can see the band are visibly overwhelmed by the response they have had on the Main Stage here today. There are big things to come for Creeper and if today’s performance is just the tip of the iceberg, we will be seeing a lot more of them in the years to come.
